Celadon introduction
When celadons were reintroduced into the north of Thailand at the beginning of the twentieth century, the knowlege and the potters came from Burma.
Only recently has serious archaeological work been undertaken in Burma and it is beginning to seem that Burma was a major production centre of ceramics, probably at the same time as wares were being made in Thailand - about 1350 to 1550.
Celadons were an important item.
Many of the small bowls and jarlets, most of which are kiln wasters, can now (2005)be safely attributed to the Twante or Phayagyi kilns to the south of Rangoon,as can some of thelarge dishes - others have been included in this section for lack of a better home for them.
Dawn Rooney, in an article in Orientations Vol 32, No 4, April 2001, clearly identified a group of celadons that were produced at Twante, some 32 kilometers from Rangoon. She dates them from the 15th to the seventeenth centuries.
